Things are heating up in Metropolis, while DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced that he’s writing a new Superman movie. In keeping with the new project, Gunn also revealed that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing the superhero.

“We have a DC slate ready to go, so we couldn’t be more excited; and we will be able to share interesting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” the director-turned-label-chief tweeted this week.

“Among those on that list is supermano. In the initial stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of the life of Supermanand so, the character will not be played by Henry Cavill”he underlined.

Sources close to DC told the site Variety that Gunn, his co-president Peter Safran and Henry Cavill recently met and are motivated to find something in the comic universe that Cavill can play, in a new project.

For his part, the actor confirmed this news that he would no longer play the role of Superman, side by side, in a statement shared on his Instagram account.

Cavill isn’t the only late-era DC star negotiating with Gunn and Safran. Ben Affleck, who has played Batman in a number of films for the label, recently met with the duo to specifically discuss the possibility of directing an upcoming DC film.

The news of Superman comes after a week of headlines of Warner Bros.’ decision not to move forward with a new film Wonder Woman (Wonder Woman), directed by director Patty Jenkins.

This week, Jenkins tweeted a lengthy statement saying it was “open to consider anything they ask of me” concerning a possible third project, which has been scrapped. Soon after, Gunn wrote back and backed up the director.
