A man armed with a knife injured six people in the train station Gare du Nord in Paris and sparked panic at France’s main railway terminal before being shot at by police.

It all happened at 6:43. The attacker attacked several people, including a police officer, with a “knife,” explained French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who arrived at the scene and provided details of the incident at a press conference.

According to him, the attacker, who has not yet been identified, was “between life and death” in a hospital.

Among the injured were several passengers and a border police officer, according to authorities. The agent was stabbed in the back but was wearing a bulletproof vestDarmanin added. Another of the victims had serious injuries to a shoulder and was being treated urgently.

Darmanin thanked the police “for their effective and courageous reaction”.

Videos recorded at Gare du Nord, one of the busiest stations in the French capital, showed a tense atmosphere as dozens of policemen crowded near the entrance to the Eurostar terminal, in an area cordoned off to the public.

The authorities have not yet provided details on the reasons that the attacker may have had.
