“Shit, cancel takeoff”: Two planes were about to collide at JFK airport in New York

Two planes almost collided at JFK airport in New York. The dramatic situation occurred on Friday night when a Delta Airlines flight bound for Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, began its take-off roll on a runway and another American Airlines plane was passing through the same place, with the intention to leave for London.

JFK air traffic controller issued an urgent order to the pilots of the Delta plane, who managed to stop the plane and avoid a catastrophe. “Shit! Delta Airlines 1943 cancels takeoff clearance!” says a controller, according to the recording of the conversations.

According to a preliminary investigation, the American Airlines pilots did not follow an order and the collision almost happened there.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will determine what went wrong and possible penalties.

Delta reported that “after the aircraft came to a safe stop on the runway, it returned to the gate where customers disembarked.” The flight was rescheduled for the next day, while flight AA106 took off shortly after for London.

Donall Brian Healy, a passenger on the Delta Airlines flight, said the crash caused a brief scare among some of those on board. “There were vocal reactions, some yelling as the plane started to slow down, then complete silence. I felt an adrenaline rush knowing it wasn’t normal and not knowing what to expect,” Healy told Business Insider.
