Matías Almeyda, recently separated from San José in United States MLS, will be the new coach of AEK from Greecein what would be his first experience in Europe.

Ten days after his departure from the United States, “Pelado” Almeyda agreed with the Athens club to a two-year contract with a clause for another, according to local media reports.

Almeyda, 48, will have his first experience as a technical director in Europe after leading San José for three years and another three for Chivas, from Mexico.

In Argentina, the Azul native made his River Plate debut and then spent more than two years at the helm of Banfield. on both teams achieved promotion to the First Division.

AEK is the third most winning team in the Greek Super League with 12 titles behind Panathinaikos (20) and Olympiacos (46).

His last celebration was in 2018 with Argentines Ezequiel Ponce and Lucas Boyé as scorers.

AEK was left in the fight for the title and took Almeyda in the middle of a special year because in the coming months its Agia Sofía stadium will reopen after five years of construction.

The team is temporarily managed by Sokratis Ofrydopoulos and the only Argentine in the squad is striker Sergio Araujo, former Boca Juniors.

Almeyda will be joined by Germán Burgos, his former teammate on River Plate and the Argentine national team, who has led Aris Salonica since the end of February.
