A prominent Russian journalist and dissident, Ilia Azar, announced today that he is on trial for criticizing Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine, another example of the crackdown on critics of the military intervention.

Azar said via Telegram that he was administratively prosecuted for “dishonoring the use of the Russian armed forces to protect the interests of Russia and its citizens and to maintain international peace.” He added that the allegation was based on a message he shared on Facebook.

“They don’t specify which, but I’m beginning to believe they’ve forgotten about me or that I’m not openly enough against the war,” he joked.

Azar, who is not currently in Russia, risks being fined up to 100,000 rubles ($1,480).

Since the start of the offensive against Ukraine at the end of February, the Russian authorities have stepped up judgment against opponents of this military intervention, which has killed thousands and sparked a serious humanitarian crisis.

Russia has strengthened its legislative arsenal, which allows it to punish anyone found guilty of “discrediting” the military or publishing “false information” with large fines or jail time.

To characterize this military attack as “war” is in theory grounds for prosecution.

Azar, 37, is a journalist working for various media outlets, including independent daily Novaya Gazeta, which ceased publication in Russia at the end of March in the face of the oppressive climate.

He is also a political rival in the city council of a Moscow region.
