Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the United States House of Representatives, was called on Thursday to testify before the congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump because of his multiple exchanges with the then-president.

The predominantly Democrat committee wants to clarify Trump’s actions before and during the attack on Congressional headquarters by his supporters, who sought to prevent Joe Biden from documenting his election victory.

Trump, who is running for reelection, claims without any evidence of presidential election fraud.

“Kevin McCarthy was in contact with President Trump before, during and after the attack,” the commission said to justify the call.

“McCarthy also claimed that immediately after the attack, “Trump” met with the president, for whom he admitted some form of responsibility for the attack,” the statement said.

Four other Republican congressmen, who were the target of court orders, are about to testify.

The investigative committee heard hundreds of witnesses, including the former president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, who was an adviser to the Republican boss during his administration.

The parliamentary body, which plans to hold public hearings in June, hopes to complete its work by midterm elections in November. If Democrats lose control of the House, the committee can be dissolved by Republicans.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that federal prosecutors are conducting a grand jury-controlled investigation into Trump’s handling of official documents, which he has been accused of deliberately neglecting and misplacing certain files.

Some of these documents in the National Archives were handed over to the commission.

At the same time, a large federal investigation is underway to find individuals directly involved in the Capitol Raid.

According to information released by the US Department of Justice on Thursday, there are 810 detainees so far, most of them charged.

It seems that many of those involved in the incident, which went around the building, are being prosecuted for petty crimes such as violating the entry ban or disrupting public order. About 280 defendants pleaded guilty.
