Follow the Capitol investigation

The Justice Department is still investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Now, with the help of “civilian” detectives, they end up identifying the aggressors.

The assignment is difficult. Law enforcement sources say the investigation is “overwhelming” with the Justice Department and the FBI.

Fifteen months after about 2,500 people stormed the Capitol in support of the then president’s efforts donald trump to reverse his defeat in the 2020 election, more than 775 defendants were arrested.

Of that total, more than 225 were convicted and two were convicted at trial: one by a jury and one by a judge.

That leaves more than 500 active cases unresolved, either through a plea agreement or trial.

The Justice Department is asking Congress for additional funding to prosecute those cases, a list that continues to grow as the arrests continue.

“There are still hundreds going,” said a detective closely involved in the investigation, speaking anonymously to avoid retaliation from supporters of pro-Trump rioters.

“We may be at 30% of the arrests, with more to come,” the detective said. “And all the crimes” committed that day, when lawmakers were counting electoral votes to confirm Biden’s victory in the presidential election, have yet to be discovered, he added.
