(Reuters) – Google blocked the Russian House of Representatives’ YouTube channel, Duma TV, and drew a harsh response from officials who said the world’s most popular streaming service would face consequences in the country.

This Saturday (9), a message on YouTube said that the Duma channel was “closed for violating the YouTube Terms of Service.”

YouTube is under pressure from Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor, and Russian authorities quickly responded to the blockade.

“YouTube seems to have screwed itself up. Save the content, transfer it to Russian platforms. And hurry,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the Telegram messaging service.

The Russian Communications Agency has issued an order for Google to immediately restore access to the Duma channel.

“The US IT company adheres to a distinctly anti-Russian stance in the information war that the West has launched against our country,” said Roskomnadzor.

Google said it is committed to complying with all applicable sanctions and trade compliance laws, in an emailed comment to Reuters.

“If we find that an account is in violation of our Terms of Service, we will take appropriate action. Our teams are monitoring the situation closely for updates and changes.”

Duma spokesman Vyacheslav Volodin said the YouTube action is further evidence of violations of rights and freedoms by Washington.

“The US wants to have a monopoly on the promotion of information. We can’t let that happen,” Volodin said on Telegram.

Russia has already restricted access to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram since sending thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24.
