William Coria gave the Argentine team to the final of the Davis Cup which will take place from 13 to 18 September in Bologna, Italy. El Mago opted for Diego Schwartzman, Francisco Cerúndolo, Sebastián Báez and the duo Máximo González and Horacio Zeballos to play doubles.

Argentina will join Group A and play Sweden on 13 September, play Italy on 16 and close their group stage participation on 17 against Croatia. The top two in each group will qualify for the knockout stage, which will be played from 23 to 27 November.

The last time Argentina played this instance was in 2019, when they fell in the quarter-finals against Spain. The Argentine team, champion in 2016, qualified for the March Finals by beating the Czech Republic 4-0 at home, in the series played at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

How Argentine singles arrive

Diego Schwartzmann. It reaches the 15th place in the standings and with a very irregular 2022 so far with a record of 26 wins and 17 losses. At Wimbledon he falls in the second round against the British Liam Brody (132nd); at Roland Garros he said goodbye in third place against Novak Djokovic.

In July he lost at the ATP Hamburg to Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori (42nd) and then at the Bastad ATP 250, where he lost in the quarter-finals to Pablo Carreño Busta (18th).

For the Davis Cup, El Peque has a record of seven wins and six losses.

Francesco Cerundolo. It will be the absolute debut of the 23-year-old from Buenos Aires in the Davis Cup. He is in 27th place in the ATP rankings and this 2022 is the jump with the title obtained at the ATP 250 in Bastad, Sweden, after defeating Sebastián Báez in the final.

Subsequently, he reached the semifinals in Hamburg where he fell against Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Meanwhile, in the last two Grand Slams he fell in the first round: against the British Daniel Evans (32nd) in Paris and against Rafael Nadal (4th) in Wimbledon.

Sebastian Baez. The 21-year-old born in San Martín, province of Buenos Aires, is having a dream year. She won the first ATP title of her career in Estoril after beating American Frances Tiafoe in the deciding match. She also reached the final in Chile and Bastad. In March, she made her Davis Cup debut in the series against the Czech Republic when she gave Argentina a point after beating Jirí Lehecka.

A pair of expert stunts

Horacio Zeballos (37 years) and Machi González (39) It will be the Argentine couple for the double. They didn’t give Jiri Lehecka and Tomas Machac a chance in the series against the Czech Republic in March and sealed Argentina’s victory to enter the Final Round in Bologna.

The funny thing is that they will play together for the fifth time, barely, for the Davis Cup. They made their debut in 2018 with a win against Colombia, they fell to coffee growers Robert Farah and Juan Sebastián Cabal in 2020. And in 2021 they won the series against Belarus.

The team led by Guillermo Coria will be able to start training at the Unipol Arena, the stadium in the city of Bologna where Group A will take place, starting from Friday 9 September at 12 noon in Argentina.
