Gust of wind at a festival in Spain: one dead, dozens injured

The extreme weather conditions that hit the Medusa Circus of Madness festival near Valencia caused the partial collapse of a stage.

One person was killed and dozens were injured on Saturday morning when a gust of wind hit a music festival near the Spanish resort city of Valencia, causing the stage to partially collapse, doctors said. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at the Medusa Circus of Madness festival on Cullera beach, some 50 kilometers south of Valencia.

“At 04:18 a.m., part of the Medusa Festival stage collapsed in Cullera due to a strong gust of wind,” the emergency services reported on Twitter. “One person died and three were seriously injured with polytrauma,” they added.

The health authorities then raised the number of injured to 40. According to press reports, the victim, a young man in his twenties, died after being hit by elements of the collapsed stage.

Images circulating on social media show strong winds lashing the site, trees and tall structures leaning dangerously, and debris flying everywhere as people clung to their tents.

The Spanish weather service AEMET said the Valencian coast was hit last night by several “hot downdrafts”, a meteorological phenomenon in which a strong downdraft hits the land and then spreads in all directions. The festival, which was expecting some 320,000 people, was evacuated for security.
