Storms in Corsica: Emmanuel Macron assures that “the State will be there” for the victims

The President of the Republic warned about the bad weather that will “repeat” and “intensify”, as he said, after the series of fires that affected the country and the storms that occurred on the island of Beauty.

The President of the Republic reaffirmed this Friday the State’s support for Corsica, after the island has been affected in recent days by a violent climate that has caused at least 5 deaths, during a speech given on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Bormes-les-Mimosas, in the Var.

“Of course today I have a very special thought for these tragedies that have affected the Island of Beauty, its inhabitants, its vacationers,” he declared.

“The State will be there in its function: to protect over time,” he assured then, without further details.

A word to the firefighters

In particular, Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the work of firefighters, these “brave people of our time” in the face of “terrible bad weather”. He welcomed both his mobilization in Corsica in the context of the storms hitting the island, as well as those who have fought against the flames in recent weeks, particularly in Gironde.

“They stuck it out with determination for days that sometimes seemed endless,” he said.

Bad weather that “threatens to repeat itself”

Emmanuel Macron also warned the population that the country was affected by a series of fires in various regions before being hit by thunderstorms in Corsica.

“These devastating climatic cataclysms unfortunately threaten to repeat themselves and intensify,” he warned.

“Il nous appartient de mieux entertain, protect, rethink our systèmes d’alert, our security rules, l’organization of our forests. C’est ce que nous ferons dès cette rentrée”, at-il assuré, sans donner more details .

The Head of State recalled the mobilization of the executive in the face of the storms that occurred in Corsica. On Thursday, the Prime Minister activated an interministerial crisis unit.

In response to the damage caused by the storms, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, on a trip to the island, announced this Friday that a state of natural disaster will be declared in Corsica next Wednesday.
