The Volkswagen Amarok pickup, made at General Pacheco, will receive a redesign and more equipment.
volkswagen argentina declared investment of $ 250 million for its plant in General Pacheco, in the province of Buenos Aires. It is reserved for the refurbishment of the Amarok pickup, the nationalization of Taos SUV parts and for the assembly of a Ducati motorcycle in Córdoba.
The announcement was made at a complex time in the national automotive industry, where manufacturers are facing big import problem part of the parts they have to make, because of government restrictions to bring in parts from outside or because of the logistical problems the world is going through as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The investment announced by the German brand will be divided into three projects. The first of them is related to Amarok adjustmentthe company’s best -selling model in the country and the one with the highest production volume at its national plant.
The Volkswagen Amarok is currently the brand’s best -selling model in Argentina.
The second phase of the investment is also related to the General Pacheco factory but aims nationalization of parts for the Taos SUV, whose national production began less than a year ago at the Buenos Aires plant, after an investment of 650 million dollars.
The third recipient of this investment plan is Ducati motorcycle assembly in the province of Cordoba. In this way, Volkswagen Argentina will be the first subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group to assemble high-end Italian brand motorcycles.
During the announcement were present the Secretary of Industry of the Nation, Ariel Schale, the Argentine ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Scioli; the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Argentina, Ulrich Sante; the Mayor of Tigre, Julio Zamora, and the Deputy Secretary General of SMATA, Mario Manrique.
Renewal to catch up
Although the Amarok truck has not fallen into the top 5 sales in Argentina since May 2020, it is a fact that the competition seems to be better positioned for the near future: many models have been updated in time. this and there are others with the confirmed arrival of new generations.
The new generation Volkswagen Amarok to be made in South Africa, in the final stages of development, will not be coming to Argentina.
Volkswagen Argentina has already confirmed that the new generation of pickup it has made in the country since 2009 will not be coming to the country and that exceed 600 thousand units made since then.
The new model, which is in the final stages of its development, will be born from an agreement with Ford stipulating that the oval brand will manage van manufacturing for Volkswagen.
At the time, it was highly likely to happen but at the Ford Argentina plant. In fact, the American company has confirmed the national manufacture of its new Ranger.
For Volkswagen Taos, which began production last year, the content of national components will increase.
Finally, the decision chose a South African oval brand factory and left future Amarok in poor condition to compete, as it had to be imported, along with all tariffs and tax charges, as addition to restrictions and logistical problems.
In this scenario, Volkswagen needs to do something for its national pickup and part of the answer is in this new investment. So far, it is known that renewal will include a redesign and update in terms of technology, safety and equipment.
Amarok has lagged behind most of its rivals in the market when it comes to driver assistance systems, and it is expected that some of the updates will come to that.
After the $ 650 million investment that allowed it to install a global platform (MQB) to produce Taos, which brought about the modernization of the plant and production processes, as well as a new paint plant, the German brand is now advancing. to make this project even better.
The Ducati Scrambler Icon will be developed at Volkswagen’s production center in Córdoba.
With the new investments announced, Volkswagen Argentina will accelerate the localization project for Taos, promoting greater local content of components and a greater commitment to the entire value chain.
Regarding the start of the assembly of a Ducati motorcycle, Volkswagen Argentina announced that it will be held inside the Córdoba Industrial Center, where it makes car gearboxes, mainly for export.
The selected model is Ducati Scrambler icon and production will begin at the end of 2022 to supply the local market.
