Traffic increased 5% from last year

Beyond mortality, the rest of the road accident indicators also decreased compared to June 2021 and compared to June 2019. Pedestrian and motorist fatalities on the rise

Two categories of road users are seeing their death toll rise. Pedestrians first, with 41 deaths in June 2022 compared to 38 in 2021 and 33 in 2019. And motorists: 139 people killed in June 2022, 24 more than in June 2021 and 7 more than in June 2019 .

The situation is more contrasted on the side of cycling mortality, with 22 deaths in June 2022, 5 less than in June 2021, but 6 more than in June 2019.

Finally, the mortality of users of motorized two-wheelers fell in June 2022 with 72 deaths compared to 92 in 2021 and 89 deaths in June 2019.

Abroad, which is the subject of a separate count, road safety records a total of 23 deaths, counts 19 in June 2021 and 23 in June 2019.

A first mid-year review

“In the first half of 2022, road fatalities amounted to 1,563 deaths, +25% higher than the first half of 2021 (1,253 deaths) and +3% compared to the first half of 2019 (1,518 deaths), reference before the pandemic”, underlines the road safety press release, without specifying the traffic variations given by Cerema that could allow going beyond simple gross figures.

The only clarification is that this increase “mainly concerns mortality outside urban areas, which is significantly higher than that of the first half of 2021, with 228 more deaths, and higher than that of the first half of 2019, with 56 more deaths. “.
