Gérald Darmanin explained that “if (this) reflection goes to the end, in conjunction with road safety associations, these provisions could come into force in 2023”.

The reflection “continues” on the project of not deducting more points from the driving license of motorists guilty of “small speeding”, declared the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, in an interview with the newspapers of the Ebra group online on Tuesday in the evening. .

At the end of May, between the presidential and legislative elections, the Ministry of the Interior had indicated that a reflection on the penalty for speeding below 5 km/h was underway.

“Certainly they are dangerous but often involuntary and represent more than 50% of the points lost (…) Therefore, the reflection continues without withdrawing these points while maintaining the fine”, said Gérald Darmanin, who speaks for the first time about the theme.

“If our thinking goes to the end, in conjunction with road safety associations, these provisions could come into force in 2023,” he added.

Some road safety associations had deplored a “regrettable” track at the end of May or encouraged motorists to “drive faster”.

“Let’s put an end to fraud and points traffic”

According to Gérald Darmanin, the government is also working on the “optional dematerialization” of the driving license and the gray card, the minister continued, to make “the withdrawal of points unfalsifiable”.

“We must put an end to fraud and the traffic of points with people who do not drive and yet do not have more points on their license. The fine for fraud would be increased to 3,750 euros (average fine today of 339 euros) ”, he detailed.

In order to reduce the time to approve the driver’s license, the government plans to recruit “100 additional inspectors” (currently 1,300, editor’s note), Gérald Darmanin also advanced. “This will give us 150,000 more seats,” he said.
