Take advantage of the summer to forget about the worries, the burdens. Although these festivities will have a special flavor for many, after two years of the pandemic, the Prevention Road association calls for not letting all the rules go by. And especially in drunk driving or on the handlebars.
A third of drivers have driven after drinking on vacation
According to a study* published by the association this week, “33% of French people say that they sometimes drive after consuming alcohol during their summer holidays, either by car (22%) or other means of transport such as cycling , scooter, motorcycle (19%)”. Behavior that usually follows changes in habits and rhythms during long vacations.
“What emerges from the survey is the difference with which one reacts to a situation of alcohol consumption, underlines the general delegate of Road Prevention Anne Lavaud in the parisian. During the year, we take more of the lead and organize our return if we plan a night out or a boozy dinner with friends or family. Much less on vacation and in summer when it’s hot and they invite us to drink much earlier.”
make arrangements
Also according to the study, for this summer in particular, “57% of French people say that they will be concerned about the issue of alcohol and driving for themselves or those around them: 41% say that they will take measures to avoid any problem on the road and 16% still do not know if they or those around them will make arrangements”.
For this reason, throughout the summer, the association will carry out awareness-raising actions on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol in tourist complexes (see box below).
As a reminder, “it is prohibited to drive with a blood alcohol level greater than or equal to 0.5 g/l of blood (that is, 0.25 mg of alcohol per liter of exhaled air),” specifies the website service- public.fr. Road Safety also reminds that the maximum rate of alcohol is reached a quarter of an hour after absorption on an empty stomach, one hour after absorption during a meal. Then the blood alcohol level falls on average from 0.10 g to 0.15 g of alcohol per liter of blood in 1 hour.
And there is no need to eliminate alcohol faster using techniques that don’t really work, like having a salty coffee or a spoonful of oil.
Prevention appointments in your vacation spots
Throughout the month of July, the association organizes its “Return to the beaches” in the vacation spots, that is, awareness workshops, with the distribution of breathalyzers, workshops to learn the difference between doses at a bar and at home, courses on drinks/alcohol to raise awareness about the effects of alcohol on travel.
