They are beginning to spread throughout the territory. In fact, “double-sided” speed cameras have appeared on certain roads, such as here in Le Mans (Sarthe). There are more than 200 throughout the country.
One photo taken from the front, then another from the back
More sophisticated than previous generations, they are capable of taking a photo of the front and rear of the speeding vehicle. “A first photograph is taken from the front of the illuminated vehicle and then the second lens photographs the rear,” specifies Road Safety. What to verbalize almost certainly, and in particular motorcyclists whose license plate is only in the back.
How to recognize them? The cabins are generally installed on two masts spaced about ten meters apart. They take the photograph of the vehicle simultaneously when it is between the two cabins.
These radars were approved in 2018, recalls the Auto-Moto site. Its approval last year, as Le Blog Coyote points out, explains its gradual deployment in the territory.
Facilitate the identification of criminals
Another point addressed by the specialized sites: this radar would be more efficient in the photos taken thanks to the taking of both front and back shots. The Auto-Moto site thus specifies that they will also “avoid reporting another driver in the event of a violation. In fact, it will now be easy to identify the face of the person behind the wheel, who will not be able to then give the identity of another so as not to lose points on your driver’s license.
This radar, developed by the company Parifex, will also eliminate the PV not sent by unusable shots, the authorities hope. According to Road Safety, about 38% of photos taken by discriminating speed cameras are unusable. “With the front and rear turn signals, the rate of resolution of infractions will be improved and this will contribute to a fairer treatment of road users”, specified Road Safety at the time of the launch of its experiment.
With this radar another technological innovation appeared: a Lidar, which allows the identification of different categories of vehicles but also a better quality of the shots whatever the conditions, details the manufacturer Parifex. These new generation radars must therefore identify the type of vehicle to be flashed, for example heavy vehicles at a different speed than light vehicles.
On the other hand, unlike “two-way” speed cameras, these cameras can only work in one direction of traffic.
