Sales of electrified cars continue to grow in Argentina.
The world of mobility is changing towards electric vehicles. Even in Argentina, with so many obstacles and at a different pace, the same thing happened.
During the first half of the year they were patented in Argentina 3,453 vehicles with “non-traditional” engines.. It consisted of 82 pure electric models and another 3,371 hybrids (combining one combustion engine with another electric).
This figure represents 274 units more than the record for the same period last year, which represents a Increase of 28.7%.according to a report by the Association of Merchants of the Argentine Republic (ACARA).
The Audi e-tron 55 Sportback is one of the 100% electric cars sold in the country.
Despite the growing trend, the local market is far from what happens in other markets. In Europe, for example, electrified vehicles already outnumber diesel ones, and more electric vehicles are sold in Norway than combustion vehicles.
Lower consumption in the case of hybrids, a much lower cost per kilometer in the case of electric vehicles and advantages such as not paying a patent or doing it with discounts in various districts or provinces are the main attractions of these technologies.
In addition, there are many brands that only produce models with some kind of electrification.
limited import
The sales rate of this type of vehicle in Argentina continues to be linked to the regulation of the Ministry of Productive Development and its provisions to regulate the decrees establishing Dimensions for importing this type of models with tariff preferences.
100% electric cars that arrive imported into the country pay only a 2% tariff, while hybrids pay 5%, unlike the 35% that any other vehicle that arrives from any country other than Brazil or Mexico has to pay, with where there is a free trade agreement.
The Ford F-150 Hybrid arrived on the market with great success.
The advantage of hybrids is also the mild-hybrid, a mild hybrid system that does not have the ability to drive the wheels using only electricity.
The patenting of electrified vehicles goes hand in hand with the entry into force of every decree that allowed the import of the quotas assigned for the brands.
According to the report, Decree 159/2022 distributed the import quotas for the second quarter of 2022 and kicked off requests for 939 units of the 1,284 available.
Ford, which had 442 assignments (for its Kuga and F-150 Hybrid models), and Toyota, with 269 (RAV4, C-HR, Camry, Prius and various models of its luxury brand Lexus).
The Japanese brand also sells the Corolla and Corolla Cross hybrid models, which do not require these quotas when arriving from Brazil. In fact, they are the best-selling electrified models in the country.
Other companies with import benefit allocations were PSA with 115 (Peugeot 3008 and DS 7 Crossback hybrids), Mercedes-Benz with 54 (C300 and AMG GLE 53), Volkswagen with 30 (all for Audi models, some electric and some mild ). – hybrid), Nissan with 25 (for its electric Leaf) and Porsche with 4 (for the electric Taycan).
Market distribution
In the first half of the year, seven brands patented new electric or hybrid models in the Argentine market.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is the best-selling electrified model on the market.
National Coradir began selling its Tito S2-100 and S5-100 (5-door) models. Peugeot has patented the hybrid version of its 3008, Audi its A4 mild-hybrid, Mercedes-Benz its C300 and E450 (also mild hybrid), Volvo has patented its plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40, XC60 and XC90, so like the Lexus LS, DS 4 and Honda Accord debuted in the local market.
Sales of electrified models in the local market during the first half of the year were driven by Toyotawith just over 84% participation.
The two Corolla and Corolla Cross models are by far the best-selling models, with the latter posting a remarkable 39% growth compared to the second quarter of 2021.
The list of best-selling brands in the hybrid and electric segment continues with Ford with its Kuga model and the foray of the new F-150.
The 13 100% electric models that circulate on the Argentine streets have a relatively short history. The first ones began to be patented only in 2018 and have progressed slowly since then.
The scarce availability of infrastructures with public chargers, the high prices at which they are marketed, the limited supply available and the doubts that this type of vehicle still generates are the main reasons for its slow development.
