Fuel prices fell again in France last week, with a drop of 3.9 euro cents for diesel and 1.4 euro cents for the SP95-E10, which fell below 1.80 euros on liter.

The drop in fuel prices continues in France. Last week, diesel lost another 3.9 cents, with an average of 1.8393 euros per liter, according to the latest statement from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition on Friday, August 5.

The decrease is more timid for gasoline, with a 95-E10 unleaded that loses 1.4 cents. But thanks to this small drop, gasoline is priced at 1.7941 euros per liter on average in France.

Gasoline returns to the level of the end of April

Gasoline thus falls below the symbolic threshold of 1.8 euros per liter, a first since the end of last April. For its part, diesel returns to its level at the end of May.

Oil price drop

Since its last peak on June 17, when it was exhibited at 2.1345 euros per liter, diesel has lost 29.52 cents.

For gasoline, the drop is even greater. The SP95-E10 was shown on average at 2,096 euros per liter on June 10, which represents a drop of 30.19 cents when compared to the average price shown last Friday.

Main explanation for this drop in prices at the pump: the drop in oil prices. A barrel of Brent from the North Sea last week lost another 3.5 dollars to 104.8 dollars. On Monday, it was shown at an even lower level, at $93.6. The same trend for the American barrel of WTI, at 87.5 dollars, compared to 96 dollars a week ago.

A very volatile market

However, this good news comes in a highly volatile market, making it impossible to make a long-term forecast of a lasting drop in prices at petrol stations. Last week, Kpler financial analyst Alexandre Andlauer anticipated, for example in BFM Business, that the price of oil could rise again soon, with a barrel at more than 120 dollars by the end of the year. Enough for fuel prices to return to historically high levels.

To limit the impact on the French fuel budget, the government instead of a discount of 30 cents per liter of fuel in September, which will achieve the 18 cent discount effective from April 1.

The discount will still be 30 cents in October, but should drop to 10 cents in November and December.
