The decline in fuel prices was accentuated last week with 95-E10 unleaded on average at 1.74 euros per liter and diesel at 1.79 euros per liter. The latter returns to its February level.

Fuel prices continued to fall last week in France. Diesel was sold on average at 1.79 euros per liter, 4.9 cents less than the previous week, and gasoline (SP95-E10) at 1.736 euros per liter, 5.8 cents less, according to the Ministry’s weekly statement for the Ecological Transition (prices fixed on Friday, August 12) published on Tuesday.

This is the eighth consecutive week of decline for diesel (which averaged 2.1345 euros per liter on June 17), the ninth for gasoline (with an SP 95-E10 at 2,096 euros per liter on June 10).

We thus find ourselves with price levels at the pump that we have not seen since the beginning of the year for diesel, which stood at 1.74 euros per liter at the end of February. For gasoline, you have to go back to mid-April to find an average price lower than the current price.

From April 1, a discount of 18 cents on the price of fuel is applied. Therefore, the price of diesel at the end of February does not take this into account. If we withdraw this government discount, the current price of diesel measured last week would be 1.97 euros, a price that was found in mid-March at French stations.

lower oil prices

Main explanation for this drop in fuel prices: the drop in oil prices. Last week, a barrel of North Sea Brent fell $0.9 to $103.9 a barrel. The fall was even more pronounced at the beginning of the week, with the barrel below 95 dollars on Tuesday, August 16.

The government rebate will increase to 30 cents starting in September, with an expected increase in oil prices. This discount will drop to 10 cents in November and December.
