Although there is no shortage of large private companies that are generally recognized as good jobs – such as Google, Mercado Libre, Walt Disney or Coca-Cola, among others – a survey that asked the opinion of 11,535 students from 82 Argentine universities surprised by its results.
Looking for stability in a critical and highly volatile context, explains why in the 5 2022 rankings of Universum consultancy, the Government of Argentina ranks among the top 10 “Most Attractive” employers for college youth.
They also appear in top ten of some of the rankings three state-owned companies: Banco Nación, Aerolíneas Argentinas and YPF. The presence of civil servants in these rankings is not exclusive to Argentina: it is a characteristic feature of all of Latin America.
In the survey, the Swedish consultancy specializing in employer brand building measures both students’ career goals and the characteristics they value most in companies. On the basis of the results, various rankings of “ideal” employers are drawn up, depending on the careers.
The young people consulted correspond to five fields of study: Business, Business Studies and Commerce (4,405 students), Engineering and Computer Science (4,374 students), Humanities, Arts, Education Sciences and Law (1,913 students), Natural Sciences (350 students) and Health Sciences and Medicine (493 students). The data was collected in the first half of the year.
The state, opposite
The Government of Argentina leads the ranking of students studying Health and Medicine and Humanities, Art, Pedagogy and Law. It ranks fifth among Natural Science students, eighth for those studying Economics and Commerce, and tenth for future engineers.
Argentine airlines appears in three lists: sixth in Humanities, seventh in Health Sciences and ninth among business and economics students.
For his part, National Bank and YPF are listed in top ten of two of the rankings. The bank ranks third among business students and fifth among humanities students. The oil company ranks second among Natural Science students and third among Engineering students.
For the Universum specialists, the presence of public employment sources in the rankings is characteristic of Latin America and has to do with the aspiration for a stable employment and future.
In the case of economic and business career students, Banco de la Nación Argentina has remained among the 5 most attractive employers since 2019. That year and the following ones it was in second place, while last year and this year it appears in third place.
Something similar happens with YPF for engineering and systems students. In 2019 and 2020, the company appeared in third position. In 2021 she was second and this year she returned to third place.
In both rankings, since 2019 Google always comes first.

According to the study, what Argentinean students value most in the workplace is that offer them professional development and training. Secondly, they care that the organization is a good reference for their career and thirdly, offering a high future income.
They also try to provide a clear path forward and secure employment. Other attributes young people value are job opportunities in other countries, innovation, leadership opportunities and a competitive base salary.
At the time of the survey, female students surveyed had a salary expectation 22% lower than males ($103,358 versus $132,346).
