Carlos Melconian once again made an exhaustive analysis of the Argentine economy, inflation and poverty after the words of the Pope and the reply of President Alberto Fernández. “I will respond professionally and depersonalize about who said what,” the economist said. And based on this, he underlined: “If someone said that this did not happen in Perón’s time, there is no historical series”, which is why for the former head of Banco Nación, “These are discussions of a political nuance that people get into one way and out the other“and to be deactivated any day now.
“I went more than once with great pleasure to the Social Ministry and I have never encountered a streak of poverty in 40 years. Also in the Uca observatory there are no homogeneous series, it happens with the Eph and with unemployment”, he said and continued with his technical analysis.
And in this regard, he assured that in the midst of all this “macroeconomic instability persists and purchasing power continues to erode”.
“How many years has it been since all the polls in Argentina say that the main problem is inflation? In 80 years, Argentina has only had one stable decade. Not anymore,” she stressed.
Entering the strictly economic field, and when asked if the near possibility of a plateau was open, the economist stated: “It would be more than a miracle.” And in this sense he added: “It’s one thing you have a month at 3% and another is a plateau”.
“By chance there may be a month where it decreases seasonally. In 12 months there is seasonality; July and December, for example, are seasonally high months in which there are increases due to holidays, bonuses, hotels, services; in March, for classes. While February and September are quiet months. Suddenly there are some months where seasonality plays in your favor, but no plateau, by any means,” the former head of the nation said on Miter radio.
He was even tougher on this, warning that inflation will be higher in the coming months, driven by rising meat prices and drought.
For Melconian it is incomprehensible that the government does not try to solve the problem of inflation. “Taking down inflation is popular. The few successful programs, long or short term, Austral and Convertibility win the election. Here’s what’s not in my head. The politician who lowers inflation is safe for eight years. So what are we talking about?”
“The politician must understand that achieving the goal here is to stabilize,” he stressed. And she explained: “If one day we are lucky enough to lower inflation, the challenge of getting used to it is for the businessman, people will be overjoyed.”
“People don’t have an inflation escape mechanism, they always lose. There’s no way,” he added. And she added: “By lowering inflation on a monthly basis to what in other countries of the world is inflation for a year, it can give hope to the next government.”
