Despite the economic crisis, mobile phones have had a growing production during 2022 in Tierra del Fuego, exceeding 10 million units. In the year of the World Cup, television production also made an expected leapaccording to a report by the Ministry of Industry and Economic Promotion.
Argentines have once again chosen mobile phones as one of their flagship productsbut the World Cup fever has been operating in the domestic market to the point that 23% more televisions and mobile phone devices were produced than in 2021.
During 2022, electronic companies based in the island 10,259,995 mobile phones were manufactured on the island protected by the sub-regime of law 19.640, indicates the official report.
There are 192,725 units more than in 2021 with a 23% increase, he points out. The month with the highest production was instead June with 1,496,488 units. While the minimum was pegged at 558,941 units.
This figure is explained by the restriction by the government of Alberto Fernández on the purchase of dollars for the importation of necessary inputs, the report continues. As the restriction caved in to pressure from manufacturers, production accelerated again to reach 953,833 units in November.
The World Cup marked the sale of televisions. Production in 2022 reached 3,306,601 units, a number that surpassed in 614,253 units the record of 2021, which also represented 23% more than in 2021.
The months with the highest production were October with 392,546 units and November with 361,175 units, the peak of the World Cup which led Argentina to win the long-awaited cup, while the lowest production was recorded in January with 47,236 units .
As for the production of household appliances, production reached 1,787,948 units, which represents a decrease of 207,694 units compared to 2021. That is, a 10% drop in production.
In this area, the month with the highest production was December with 197,356 units, while the month with the lowest production was January with 83,479 units.
In the category of electronic and mechanical auto parts, 283,584 units were produced. Compared to the previous year, production was reduced by 29,932 units, which represents a 10% decrease in percentage terms.
Total, there are about 15,800 direct and indirect jobs which occupies the sector according to the Association of Argentine Terminal Electronics Factories.
However, in mid-July 2022, electronics and auto parts companies in Tierra del Fuego staged major complications in their supply chain, leading to numerous layoffs and payroll suspensions affecting 13% of operators, as reported by the industry.
“If we continue in this economic disaster, no one will make it to 2023neither the ruling party nor the opposition, it wears us all out,” Governor Gustavo Melella said at the time.
