Prior to meeting between President Alberto Fernández and his counterpart Joe Bidenintroduced Economy Minister Sergio Massa to the US government a series of four videos on Argentina, with which he tried to put on the table both the degradation caused by drought and the potential that the country has in terms of mining, knowledge economy and Vaca Muerta. The main goal was to get support against the IMF.
So, one by one all the videos:
The consequences of drought
The most difficult video was undoubtedly the one that talks about drought and the economic consequences it entails for the country. “Argentina is facing the most severe drought in its history today”, begins the fourth and last of the videos Massa sent to top White House officials. The video, with a great visual load, explains that due to this climatic phenomenon “there are 173 million hectares affected and that approximately 11.5 million hectares dedicated to agricultural production, more than 24 million head of cattle and approximately 726,000 homes across the country.
The report also indicates that this situation has a total impact on the 5 sectors of the country. For example, the audiovisual material explains that the Wheat production decreased by 43%the one of 25.2% soy is that of corn, 21.4%. “As a result, the exportable balance is estimated to be reduced in 28 million hectares, equivalent to about 20 million dollars”details.
mining growth
“In Argentina we are on track to develop an environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, economically integrated, globally competitive”, warns at the beginning of the video on the Argentine mining sector.
With 119 projects underway and significant investment, mining is a strong bet locally. And it also highlights the boom in mining in general which has led to the generation of thousands of jobs.
The video also underlines that Argentina is part of the lithium triangle together with Bolivia and Chile and that it constitutes a key area for the future of renewable energy.
Knowledge economy, the great potential
The video talks about the great potential of the knowledge economy and the material warns that it is “a strategic sector for the development of Argentina”.
“Today it is the third most important export sector in the country. In 2022, it was sold to the world for $7,000 million, and $9,000 million is expected this year,” he explains.
Vaca Muerta, a great opportunity
The audiovisual material of Vaca Muerta highlights that it is a field which “with an area of 30,000 square kilometers, has the second most important reserve in the world of unconventional gas resources and the fourth of unconventional oil”.
It is the land where the main oil companies of Argentina and the world operate, with estimated investments of US$ 8,000 million this year.
“Between 2012 and 2022 investments of 40,000 million dollars were made”highlight the video.
“Vaca Muerta also represents a real source of foreign exchange income”, highlights. And he adds that “in 2022 it generated exports of 2.3 billion dollars which could double during this year”.
