Kristalina Georgieva assessed the economic measures of Javier Milei’s government, the day before the meeting with the president in the framework of the Davos Forum. The head of the International Monetary Fund said he was optimistic about the impact of the president’s first initiatives: “We are seeing progress.”

“So far, so good”was his first response when asked about the measures Milei has adopted since taking office, which include the mega DNU and the omnibus law being discussed in Congress.

He then analyzed the impact on the fiscal front and on the accumulation of reserves.

“What this administration is doing is very aggressively correct some deficiencies that we all see. Fiscally we spend more than we can. The reserves are empty,” diagnosed the IMF head.

And he concluded: “So we are seeing progress on all these fronts.

His statements are part of an interview with the Bloomberg agency, in which he reflected on the world economy and dedicated a chapter to the libertarian’s experience in Argentina.

Georgieva was due to meet with Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Cabinet Chief Nicolás Posse on Monday. That meeting – which will precede the one with Milei – has, however, been postponed until Wednesday.

Instead of the meeting with the head of the IMF, both officials had a meeting with the deputy director of the Fund, Gita Gopinath. “They discussed the staffing level agreement reached with the organisation,” they reported from the Treasury Building.

This meeting was the first activity of the journey of the delegation led by Javier Milei, who went to the summit where the leaders of the main powers and the owners of the largest assets meet. The change of agenda occurs amid Washington’s doubts about the adjustment plan and the government’s wait for the approval of a new disbursement.

The conversation with the number 2 of the Fund opened the agenda of the Argentine delegation to the Davos Forum, the summit where the leaders of the main powers and the owners of the largest assets meet. The change comes amid the agency’s doubts about the adjustment plan and a few days after the announcement of a new disbursement.

Last Thursday, Caputo confirmed that the program interrupted due to non-compliance by the previous government had been resumed and said that the International Monetary Fund had committed an outlay of $4.7 billion, although he made its completion conditional on approval of the organization’s Board of Directors.

Milei has already said that the aim of the talks with the International Monetary Fund in Davos is “to continue to dialogue and make clear the conviction we have in this change of course”. In this spirit you will face the meeting with Georgieva on Wednesday.
