After nearly a month of negotiations and US support for the program with the International Monetary Fund, Javier Milei met for the first time on Wednesday with the organization’s director, Kristalina Georgieva, to advance the agreement signed last week which still must be approved and involves an outlay of 4.7 billion dollars.

The meeting took place in the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the president had previously given a speech in which he warned that the main world leaders “have abandoned the model of freedom for collectivist experiments”, warning of the “danger ” of socialism and asked them “not to be intimidated by castes or parasites who live off the state.”

Georgieva was accompanied by the organization’s number 2, Gita Gopinath, with whom yesterday the head of Gaginete, Nicolás Posse, and the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, had a first contact. This second meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, and the Argentine ambassador to the United States, Gerardo Werthein.

“President Javier Milei had a meeting with the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, and its First Deputy Managing Director, Gita Gopinath, as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos,” the report from the office of the president in the X network, where they also published a photo in which the president is seen surrounded by the two officials.

The Fund’s front page welcomed the government after the fundamental signal of support sent yesterday by the White House. “We support continued engagement between Argentina and the IMF. The IMF program is an important tool to support Argentina as it charts a path to greater economic stability and prosperity,” the State Department told Clarín.

Last week the government agreed to revive the abandoned program and the Fund committed to releasing a disbursement of $4.7 billion, but the organization has not yet confirmed when the board of directors will meet to authorize it. Caputo hopes that happens in the next two weeks, as he needs dollars to pay off payments through April, including $1.95 billion due at the end of the month.
