Author of the economic program which aims to bring public finances into fiscal balance by the end of this year, the Minister of Economy Luis Caputo had a unexpected prominence during the frenetic day in which the CGT carried out its general strike with mobilization in Plaza Congreso.
The minister invasion on social media take a position on the concrete consequences that could arise from Congress’ failure to approve some substantial parts of the Omnibus bill which will be discussed next week in the Chamber of Deputies. But furthermore, his name was invoked, with very different intentions, by the truck driver’s trade unionist Pablo Moiano and also by the deputies Miguel Pichetto and Rodrigo De Loredo. Moyano predicted that the minister might end up being thrown into the Riachuelo. Pichetto accused him of not having the courage to defend the project to the Deputation. De Loredo even spoke of the possibility of an impeachment trial.
Pablo Moyano launched a sentence that sounded like a death threat: “Milei said that the Minister of Economy, due to the measures he is taking, must get carried away and I tell him that if he implements these economic adjustment measures , of dismissal, the workers, the pensioners, will carry him on a litter to the minister. but throw it into the Riachuelo”, complete.
Before those episodes Caputo had taken a stand to make this clear it is not willing to accept substantial cuts to its adjustment plan, which consists of more taxes and fewer expenses. All or nothing.
It happens that, even if the party in power managed to approve a majority opinion, doubts persist on at least a couple of key points:
– Withholding taxes that seek to apply to certain agricultural products and industrial exports
– The application of the new formula for adjusting pensions, pensions and social benefits.
In this regard, Caputo expressly stated, a few hours after the conclusion of the session of the Budget and Finance Commission of Deputies:
Then he took it upon himself to respond to a bill that asked him to adapt less to pensioners and more to caste.
He did this by multiplying the leliq stock by 20 and leaving the country on the brink of the hyperinflation we are trying to avoid. If you really care about retirees, I can’t imagine how many “do something” tweets you must have written in the last 4 years. Otherwise you’re just another hypocrite…”
And in the end he ended up bonding with Pichetto. The deputy and leader of the We Make Federal Coalition bloc intervened to respond to Caputo’s tweet referring to the cuts that the provinces would suffer.
Pichetto said: “The Minister of Economy Luis Caputo, who he didn’t have the courage “If he comes before Congress, he needs to stop pressuring governors and try to work out deals with provincial governments instead of threatening them.”
Caputo’s response: “Vice, if anything I have a lot of courage, that’s why I accepted this position at the worst time in our history. As for not going to Congress, I had more important things to do for the country, like closing the deal with the Fund which was declining and we were on the verge of default. Finally, the tweet is not a threat, it is a response to all Argentinians who wonder what would happen if Congress does not approve the law: I confirm that we will also reach the fiscal target, which will mean that the provinces will have fewer resources.”
The MP from Cordoba joined this conversation Rodrigo de Loredo, president of the bloc of UCR deputies, to respond to Caputo that “our bloc yesterday allowed his government to have an opinion from the commission in record time, despite the government’s unprecedented minority in Parliament. You will have the regulatory tools to implement your management and economic plan. If your warning is for us to adjust pensioners or increase withholdings, know that this will not happen. It won’t be a law. Thanks in advance for your courage. I remind you that the ministers They are not voted by the people and are available for decrees or impeachment. That the governors, however, were voted by the people of their districts. That people didn’t vote for an adjustment to pensioners or for an increase in withholdings. This is also not a threat, it is a response to all the pensioners and producers who are wondering if the adjustment will fall on them again or if a change has really happened.”
Caputo continued to respond to casual reports. “The zero deficit cannot be negotiated. If all the economic measures proposed by the law are not approved, as President Javier Milei said yesterday, the adjustment will be greater, fundamentally for the provinces”.
The discussion on the Omnibus Law will certainly bring more episodes like these.
