At the conclusion of her visit to Ottawa this week, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai reaffirmed on Rosemary Barton Live on Sunday that access to Canada’s dairy market remains “a source of great frustration”.
According to the American representative, dairy products and supply management remain a point of contention between the Canadian and American economies.
In the Canada-United States-Mexico (CUSMA) agreement, access to the Canadian dairy industry was considered an achievement by Americans. However, the interpretation of the provisions of the Canadian agreement has been disputed by the American representative.
A dispute resolution panel concluded in January that Canada was not fulfilling its promises under the agreement, and the Americans declared victory.
Canada proposed a new import allocation system, but US producers criticized it.

Last Thursday, at a press conference by Secretary Katherine Tai and Trade Minister Mary Ng, the latter was asked about the dairy dispute. The Minister answered that Canada will certainly implement the findings of the panel report.
But he also pointed out that the federal government knows how important this issue is for our farmers, for the industry and for the workers they employ.
