Regional air transport: Quebec plan takes effect Wednesday

The Minister of Transport, François Bonnardel, provides details on the strategy announced in April by the government in terms of regional air transport, a day before the entry into force of the program.

As already announced by the government, the first phase provides for the reimbursement of air fares for residents of remote regions.

The targeted regions are those in Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Côte-Nord, Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Eeyou Itchee Baie- James.

Reimbursements that residents will be entitled to will vary from 30% to 60%, depending on the region of residence. There is no maximum annual reimbursement amount.

The second part, intended to support air carriers to offer cheap tickets, aims to offer air tickets at a maximum price of $ 500 for a round trip (or $ 250 for one way) to some targeted links. There will be a limit of three return tickets per person per year.

Tourists and foreign students will also be able to take advantage of these rates, among other things to promote tourism. Minister Bonnardel’s statements on this subject during the announcement on April 19 and in the days that followed were contradictory.

The opposition denounced a plan bad aggregate.

This new program has a budget of $ 86 million through March 31, 2024.

The initial recovery plan provided 261 million over five years.

He has been expected for almost two years.
