Former Quebec director of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Marc Ranger will eventually not seek the position of president of FTQ when Daniel Boyer left the union center in November.

Mr. Ranger publicly expressed his interest and thoughts on the matter on June 1. He then said he was “tempted” by the presidency.

In an interview with The Canadian Press on Monday, Mr. Ranger overcame his decision not to join the race by the fact that he did not see how the two highest heads of the central labor body could come from the same large union affiliated to FTQif elected.

Indeed, the Secretary General of FTQ and number two, Denis Bolduc, seeking re -appointment, also came CUPE.

The laws of FTQ do not, however, prohibit the two top leaders of the central trade union from coming from the same affiliated union. But Mr. will not be comfortable. Ranger in this situation.

The FTQ has several other large affiliated unions, including the private sector, such as Unifor, United Steelworkers, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), the FTQ-Construction and the Teamsters, for example.

And traditionally the FTQ has always been able to maintain a private-public balance in its senior management.

Mr. Ranger gave another reason for his decision: the quality of the candidacy of Magali Picard, former national executive vice-president for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the large pan-Canadian union of federal public servants.

Si Ms. Picard, who is the only candidate officially running, would be, if elected, the first woman to head the central. And he was Huron-Wendat.

There is also no general secretary.

Mr. may choose. Ranger to also apply for the position of Secretary General, against Denis Bolduc, but he preferred not to do so, so as not to create a division within the CUPEthe largest union affiliated with FTQ.

It would have been possible if there was a candidate from the private sector [mais deux candidats du SCFP l’un contre l’autre]… there is a risk of chicanery; looks badsaid Mr. Ranger.

Personally, if I were a delegate to congress, I would say to the two candidates: “Go and settle this and you will tell us when the white smoke comes out!” Mr. called. Ranger.

No retirement, finally

Mr. announced. Ranger his retirement from CUPE in August, but he still had weeks off to go. Now, after spending a few months away from union activism, he has announced that he will not be retiring after all.

I love the labor relationship environment too much; it is in my blood; I like this! I will not retire. I have something to do. Negotiation is what I prefer: finding solutionshe concludes.

Of the other candidates that could be considered, Renaud Gagné, of the big union Unifor, has already announced that he will retire in the coming months.

And Dominic Lemieux of the United Steelworkers, a rising star in the FTQinform that he will not submit his candidacy.

Interested parties must communicate their interest in the fall.

The FTQ has more than 600,000 members, and its two top leaders also hold positions in the Solidarity Fund FTQ.
