Alec Oxenford, founder of digital commerce companies such as DeRemate and OLX, attended the cycle this Tuesday Democracy and development organized by Clarionewhere he spoke of the “beautiful adventure” of the company.
“Working in technology is at the limit of today, of the situation and working with knowledge allows us to understand the present and a little of what will come in the future and build the future, “he said.
The second part of the meeting was dedicated to the protagonists of Argentina, which has already generated 12 technological unicorns, companies worth over 1,000 million dollars. This segment was attended by the founders of some of the most important companies in the sector: Martín Migoya, from Globant; Alex Oxenford of DeRemate, OLX, Alpha Capital and LetGo; and Emiliano Kargieman, of Satellogic.
“The industry was and continues to be increasingly important in Argentina, but at one point it was the most important in the continent. All Latin American unicorns were Argentine for a while, today only 17% are Argentine. So somehow the balance is changing, but we come from being very pioneers and generating a huge impact in the whole region“, he has declared.
Oxenford spoke about the challenges of a connected world 24 hours a day and referred to the “data revolution”, which fosters new opportunities for Argentina.

In this sense, he spoke of the data protection law, but criticized the fact that this pioneering standard was not updated. “Argentine history still gives us the opportunity to be gamers, as in cryptocurrencies due to instability, and in data we could play a significant role, but it is not possible to imagine a relevant future and globally significant with the noise imposed by a runaway macro and schematics of Mussolini’s labor laws, “he said.
The entrepreneur also recalled the need to order and generate a favorable context, which prevents the great talents of the country from going abroad in search of opportunities.
Juan Martín de la Serna, president of the Mercado Libre Argentina, also participated; Damián Scokin, CEO of Despegar; Wanda Weigert, Executive Director of Globant Argentina, and Marcelo Carrique, President of Bioceres.
This segment discussed how Argentina can continue to be cradle of new unicorns, of companies that generate high value based on knowledge, software, biotechnology. But the situation of companies was also discussed, one of whose main challenges today is to generate and retain trained personnel.
This year the cycle Democracy and development proposes to discuss how to get Argentina back on the road to development. The first two meetings have already taken place. The first, on 17 May, analyzed the Basis for growth, with one table focusing on the economy and another on legal certainty. The second was on June 16 and dealt with human and physical capital, education and infrastructure needed for development. This is the fourth edition of the Democracy and Development cycle.
