The city of Bourg-en-Bresse announced Friday that it has issued a decree that prohibits merchants from leaving their doors open when the air conditioning is on, an “absurd practice” contrary to the imperative of “energy sobriety”.
This measure will come into force on Monday and any infraction, confirmed by the municipal police, will be sanctioned with a fine of 38 euros, the city council informed AFP.
“Absurd Practice”
“Too many businesses leave their shop doors open all day even with the air conditioning running at full blast. An absurd practice based on the idea that a business whose door is left open would attract more customers and increase turnover. ‘business’ , explains the municipality of Bourg (40,000 inhabitants).
“Most of the time, it is the big brands that give this type of instruction to their network and to their franchisees. However, the context collectively forces us to be ever more attentive to our energy consumption” and “the inflationary period that we have known since the beginning of the war in Ukraine urges us to have more responsibility and energy sobriety”, continues the consistory.
The latter had already called mail order this winter to merchants who left their doors open with the heating on.
