The peak of the heat wave is expected this Monday in France with hellish temperatures, especially in the south of France. In reality, the entire country will suffocate, even in regions that are used to milder temperatures even in summer.
Thus, since the first heat wave last June, sales of air conditioners have skyrocketed. Integrated home systems, installed and calibrated by a professional, but also portable air conditioners called “monobloc” that can now be found for less than two hundred euros in stores.
They are found in DIY stores, in hypermarkets but also in discount stores.
“A Heresy”
However, there are many criticisms of these one-piece installations. In its brochure prepared to avoid the heat, the Environment Agency (Ademe) warns against buying on a whim. First reason: the device consumes a lot of power. Thus, a class A air conditioner represents an electrical consumption of more than 130 euros for a month of use. That’s 30 times more than a fan and 2.5 times more than a fixed air conditioner.
The energy cost is also explained by the principle of this system, which requires the air to be evacuated through a pipe that must lead to the outside.
air freshener
So for those who are not equipped with a fixed air conditioner, there are alternatives such as the air cooler that, if it does not have the efficiency of the first, allows the temperature of a room to drop a little.
But there are also common sense tips for housing. “As soon as the outside air is colder than the inside, you open and as soon as the inside air is warmer than the outside, you close”, summarizes Valère Correard. It is also better to turn off household appliances on standby and bring in moisture (with clothes to dry, for example).
Finally, it is better to favor, in the long term, the installation of a fixed air conditioner for your home.
