Europe continues with its gas fever. To diversify its supplies and get rid of its dependence on Russian gas, the president of the European Commission, Urusla von der Leyen, is in Baku on Monday, reports Reuters. She will be accompanied by the European Commissioner for Energy, the Estonian Kadri Simson.
“Against the backdrop of Russia’s continued militarization of its energy supplies, diversifying our energy imports is a priority for the EU,” the institution said on Twitter.
Next agreement with Baku
The 27 want to count on the help of Azerbaijan, which is already a major producer and exporter of gas to Europe. An agreement must be signed, according to Reuters, to increase these deliveries.
In this perspective, a document from the Commission consulted by the agency indicated the will of Brussels to expand one of the three gas pipelines that link Baku with the continent. Currently, the gas corridor to the country includes 3 gas pipelines (South Caucasus, Trans-Anatolian and Trans-Adriatic).
Inaugurated in 2020, the complex has made it possible to deliver 8,000 million cubic meters of natural gas in 2021, that is, around 2% of European consumption. This figure is expected to exceed 10 billion in 2022.
