The Economy Minister assures that the “majority will be open to all constructive proposals” but rejects commitments “with billions”.

“We want commitment” but “not with billions”, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire stressed on Monday in the Assembly, at the opening of the debates on the bill dedicated to purchasing power.

In the absence of an absolute majority for the Macronists, “I hope we can move forward in the most constructive way possible”, “any proposal can be improved and the majority will be open to all constructive proposals. We simply will not enter into a logic of superiority”, the minister insisted.

At the heart of this bill for emergency measures to protect purchasing power are the early revaluation of 4% of retirement pensions and social benefits, the 3.5% increase in the salaries of civil servants , a food check of 100 euros with verification of resources, to which 50 euros per child will be added. There is also the expansion of the energy tariff shield, the abolition of the audiovisual canon or the tripling of the “Macron bonus” (tax-free and exempt from social security contributions).

“Nothing that could harm our public finances”

Bruno Le Maire has thus set a “framework” for future negotiations: “nothing that could harm our public finances, nothing that could slow down the climate transition, everything for work”. The Government is especially hostile to freezing the price of gasoline at 1.50 euros as proposed by the LR, or to the VAT reductions supported by the RN.

Bruno Le Maire thus opposed the “irreversible reduction in taxes on fossil fuels (…) as detrimental to public finances as it is to the climate”. The government favors extending the 18-cent fuel discount until October 1 and then establishing a “worker fuel allowance.” With only a relative majority, the macronistas suffered a setback in the Assembly on the health bill just under a week ago. They hope this time to avoid such disappointment.
