Amid the shortage of semiconductors, Volkswagen on Wednesday announced its cooperation with STMicroelectronics (ST) for the development of a new chip, Reuters reports.
Goal for the German manufacturer: to be better equipped to deal with supply difficulties. “With planned direct cooperation with ST and TSMC [un autre constructeurs de semi-conducteurs, ndlr]we are actively shaping our entire semiconductor supply chain,” said Murat Aksel, head of procurement at Volkswagen.
Volkswagen’s computer development unit CARIAD and STMicroelectronics said they will jointly design this new chip that will complement ST’s “high-performance Stellar family of microcontrollers.”
Volkswagen chooses Qualcomm chips for autonomous driving
In May, the Volkswagen group announced that it had chosen chips from US semiconductor giant Qualcomm to equip its future self-driving cars for which it has been developing software internally since “the middle of the decade”.
CACRIAD will be based on Qualcomm chips called “Snapdragon Ride”. These will become “a crucial element” in “embedding competitive autonomous driving features across all brands in the group,” according to a press release. It will be used in particular in the future Trinity model, scheduled for 2026, group head Herbert Diess said on LinkedIn.
