Accused by the British of “ruining the start of the holidays” due to the “insufficiency of customs personnel on the French border”, the prefect of the North, Georges-François Leclerc, denied any lack of preparation in the management of flows from the port of Dover (southeast England) where endless queues formed on Friday.
A technical incident in the Channel Tunnel
According to him, it was “planned to arm all the tourist cabins (checkpoint, editor’s note) in the port of Dover, starting at 8:30 am” but “an unforeseen technical incident in the Channel Tunnel led the police at the borders to postpone the desired full operational capacity by one hour. Even so, the device “was completed in the tourist booths” from 9:45 am.
“Currently, the traffic difficulties in the Eurotunnel have been resolved, but very heavy road traffic is still observed in British territory, with slowdowns of several kilometres”, continues the prefect of the North, recalling in passing that “the fluidity of flows at the port of Dover is the joint responsibility of a range of actors, including in particular shipping companies, the port of Dover and the UK authorities”.
