The discount announced by the oil giant is causing concern among the competition, unable to match such a measure.

The discount on pumps of 20 cents announced by TotalEnergies worries other networks of service stations, where professionals fear “client evasion” and a drop in volumes.

“Such decisions will create customer churn and it’s just catastrophic.” “I foresee lower volumes, in the others than Total, from 30 to 50%,” she added.

“The government put pressure on Total, now what do we do for the rest?” he asked.

TotalEnergies will apply a discount at the pump of 20 cents per liter between September and November at all its service stations, then 10 cents per liter the rest of the year.

“The only ones who can do that is Total”

The Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, also spoke on Saturday in favor of an increase from 18 to 30 cents in the discount per liter of fuel by the State. With the bonus from the oil and gas giant, “you would have fuel for 1.5 euros at some service stations in France,” he said.

However, out of some 11,000 service stations in France, only TotalEnergies and its 3,500 stations are affected by the voluntary reduction of 20 cents at the pump.

The official specifies that he has alerted the government about the fate of the other networks, which with few exceptions (Eni, Shell), do not belong to integrated oil groups.

Large retailers, with some 5,000 stations in France (and 63% of the volumes sold in 2019), sometimes offer offers at cost price but this only means a discount of one or two cents, the margins being already reduced in this product.
