“It seems to us that an Arenh ceiling of 135 terawatt hours for 2024 and 2025 would be a reasonable compromise,” Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said on Wednesday.

The government is considering “a compromise” on the maximum volume of nuclear electricity sold at low cost by EDF to its competitors, Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said on Wednesday.

This mechanism, called Regulated Access to Historical Nuclear Electricity (Arenh), weighs on the accounts of the public company.

“I can present an amendment in this sense,” he added during his hearing before the Senate Economic Affairs Committee.

In January, to contain the rise in regulated electricity prices, the government asked EDF to increase by 20% (from 100 TWh to 120 TWh) the annual quota of electricity sold at reduced prices to its competitors.

An 8 billion euro decision for EDF, which had angered the unions as CEO of the already heavily indebted group.

This year, EDF plans to produce a total of 280-300 TWh of nuclear electricity in France, a very low level due to corrosion problems in certain reactors in the fleet.

Last week, the deputies approved, against the advice of the government, the increase in the price at which EDF must sell its production under the Arenh, during the first reading examination of the emergency bill in favor of purchasing power, which contains an energy component.

EDF, which the government plans to renationalize 100% of, is due to publish its half-year financial results on Thursday morning.
