“President Alberto Fernández has not recently communicated with the CEO,” reads a message via WhatsApp sent by someone identified by the agency’s spokesperson to the Argentine media, including Clarín. This confirms that Fernández had no contact with director Kristalina Georgieva today.

The clarification of the IMF stems from the fact that the official agency Télam had previously reported that “government sources told this agency that the head of state spoke by telephone with the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, on the Massa’s appointment as minister, who will be in charge of Argentina’s relations with international credit organizations as part of his new duties. The cablegram was at 12:13 and the Fund’s denial around 15:00.

When the news emerged of the alleged contact between the President and the director, Fernández and the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Massa, they met this morning at the Presidential Residence of Olivos to analyze the next measures that the still in office legislator will assume his new role as head of the Ministry of Economy, Production and Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and which will also include relations with international, bilateral and multilateral credit organizations.

Argentina and the IMF agreed on an Extended Structures program in March of this year for approximately $ 45 billion. The country has already received two disbursements and the third will arrive in September. It passed the first target revision in June and the same should happen in the spring.

This week the IMF received Silvina Batakis in Washington, who had come there as Economy Minister and introduced herself. “We welcome your initial efforts to strengthen fiscal sustainability,” said Georgieva.

Argentina has had another economy minister for five days and the IMF has denied the government.
