This year, the back-to-school allowance is due on August 16 and increased by 4%.

Again this year, approximately 3 million families will benefit from the Back to School Bonus (ARS). Created in 1974, this aid aims to support low-income households that have to bear the cost of returning their children from 6 to 18 years of age to school.

Paid subject to means test, the ARS is paid automatically by the CAF and the MSA for children under 16 years of age. For those ages 16-18, a statement that the child is still in school must be submitted. This year, the transfers will take place on August 16, according to the website of the Ministry of National Education.

In addition, after an automatic increase of 1.8% in April, ARS, like all social benefits, will be increased by 4% under the purchasing power law approved in Parliament. Specifically, this means that the amount of the benefit will be:

  • 392.05 euros per child from 6 to 10 years old,
  • 413.69 euros per child from 11 to 14 years old
  • and 428.02 euros per child between 15 and 18 years of age.

Exceptional Back-to-School Attendance Also Planned

To benefit from it, interested households must not have resources that exceed the following maximum limits in 2020: 25,370 euros for one dependent child, 31,225 euros for two dependent children, 37,080 euros for three dependent children and 42,935 euros for four dependent children.

Note that the amending budget voted on Thursday in Parliament also provides for “exceptional food aid for returning to school” that will benefit low-income households. Its amount will be 100 euros per household. It will be paid automatically in September to recipients of minimum social benefits, interns and workers who are beneficiaries of the activity bonus.
