It’s a race against time to save what can still be saved… Gironde’s timber industry is ready to go looking for the wood burned in the fires that devastated part of the region – 20,000 hectares – last July and continues to recover intermittently.
To limit losses, this wood must be recovered before insects and fungi destroy it. Of lower quality, it can still be used to make pallets of wood, cardboard or paper pulp. Fully carbonized wood can be used as charcoal.
The National Forestry Office hopes to have the green light from the fire department by mid-September.
Main challenge for forestry operators: finding the necessary workforce to meet this demand. The ONF plans to work with companies located outside the massif, or even abroad, to extract as much wood as possible.
