This is something to delight Italian pizza purists. Seven years after its arrival in the country, the American Domino’s Pizza throws in the towel and closes its last branch, announces Bloomberg. The world giant in the sector, which claims to be the largest pizza delivery and takeaway company, has finally been brought down by local competition.
Not by an Italian industrialist, but simply by traditional Italian pizzerias. The latter, affected like everyone else in the restoration by the confinements, have been able to forge good alliances with the delivery companies so as not to leave Domino’s field open.
lost bet
However, the American group had dreamed of opening 880 restaurants in the country, relying on its highly structured delivery system and offering ingredients little used in Italy, such as the famous pineapple pizza. According to Bloomberg, the Italian subsidiary had a debt of 10.6 million euros at the end of 2020.
Emblematic product of their culture, pizza is not, however, the prerogative of the Italians, since it is the Americans, and then the French, who consume the most each year. La Botte, on the other hand, remains very attached to its traditional pizza because if Domino’s leaves the country, Pizza Hut simply isn’t there.
