As part of an energy emergency plan, the British government has planned a possible electricity supply next winter. These measures, only foreseen in the worst possible scenario, would affect both industries and households.

The UK is planning power cuts for next winter. These voluntary interruptions, decided as part of an emergency plan, would apply not only to industries but also to British homes, reports Bloomberg.

However, the UK does not anticipate such cuts in its baseline scenario. Such measures would intervene, across the Canal, only in the event of a particularly cold winter combined with gas shortages that would allow certain power plants to operate.

According to the worst forecast evaluated by the government in its planning, the country could face an electricity deficit equivalent to a sixth of the “peak” demand. In this scenario, the strong need for electricity caused by the drop in temperatures would also be accompanied by a reduction in gas imports from Norway and electricity from France.

4 days of expected cuts in the worst scenario

This extreme situation would force Great Britain to apply power cuts for a total of four days, reports Bloomberg.

Although these measures are not contemplated in the government’s base scenario, mentioning them demonstrates the importance of energy management in the coming months.

Although unlikely, these cuts are being considered even as homes could be directly affected by an explosion in energy costs this winter. So much so that the “Don’t pay UK” movement is urging Britons not to pay their October bills as a sign of protest.
