Seven European countries, including France, agreed to review the indicator that qualifies the nutritional quality of food. To be more consistent with dietary recommendations, the Nutri-score will give more value to whole, salt-free, and sugar-free products.

The Nutri-score becomes more rigorous. On July 26, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland agreed on a new classification of the famous indicator that has adorned food packaging since 2017 and indicates its nutritional quality from A to E. The scientific committee at charge of monitoring the Nutri-score, therefore, plans to apply a new algorithm to it, more in line with dietary recommendations.

Fish valued above red meat

No fewer than five product categories will thus be modified. This is especially the case of oils, of which those “less rich in saturated fats” will be valued, such as those from olives, rapeseed or nuts, as well as the foods that contain them. Salmon and other fatty fish will also score higher, unlike red meat, which will score lower than poultry.

Whole grains will also score higher than refined grains. Conversely, cereals with a high sugar content will see their grade reduced from A to C.

As for dairy products, the difference between those that are sweet and those that are not will be more marked. Finally, processed products, ready-to-heat meals, and certain frozen pizzas will no longer have a green (A or B) rating.

An adjustment period for operators

Some changes for the beverage category have not yet been determined, but the entire new system will be finalized before the end of 2022 for implementation on shelves in the coming weeks.

Operators will also benefit from support during the implementation of this Nutri-score 2.0.
