Faced with the vertiginous increase in energy bills in the Canal, the Green Party has called for the nationalization of the main companies in the sector, including EDF Energy.

EDF under British flag? The idea seems preposterous. However, it is the proposal of the British Greens who actually want the nationalization of the English subsidiary, EDF Energy, as well as the other four main energy companies.

This would happen then, for environmentalists, by the nationalization of British Gas, E.ON (whose parent company is German), EDF, Scottish Power and Ovo. All for 2.85 billion pounds sterling according to calculations by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella organization of British unions, based on share prices.

A good opportunity on paper as the British government has already spent £2.2bn to save Bulb, the country’s sixth largest gas and electricity supplier.

It remains to be seen whether the French state, EDF’s majority shareholder, would agree to a nationalization of the company’s British subsidiary. Bercy can rest easy: neither the Conservatives nor Labor have taken up the idea on their own.
