The technique is now well known and widely used by multinationals. Last year, Uber only paid 7 million euros in France, reveals Capital. A tiny sum for a giant whose French activity is largely underestimated in its accounts
Like most multinationals, the Californian group has implemented a tax optimization system to redirect most of its profits to better pastures, in this case Holland, where taxation is more lenient.
The company is divided into two entities, Uber France SAS and Uber Eats France SAS.
For the first company, the contract made with customers is actually with Uber BV, located in the Netherlands. Therefore, the turnover is declared there and the profit tax is settled. As a result, in France only the “marketing, assistance and support” activities remain, which only generated a turnover of 56.9 million euros per year in 2021.
On the other hand, Uber Eats France SAS has a turnover of 1.3 billion euros but its net result is starvation, again thanks to a tax arrangement towards the Netherlands, underlines Capital.
The tax hide and seek game between Uber and Bercy is not new. Launched in 2011, the VTC service has used criticized methods for years to avoid paying more taxes. The Ministry of Finance has launched two adjustments for the years 2012 to 2017 for a total amount of one million euros. A weak sanction that did not encourage Uber to modify its tax regime.
