The gap continues to widen between sales in value and volume in supermarkets. According to Iri, turnover from the sale of consumer products increased by 6.4% in July. At the same time, the French bought in smaller quantities as volumes fell 0.9% over the period. An unprecedented difference of more than 7 points that is explained by the strong inflationary push in supermarkets.
Volumes that continue to fall but at a level lower than that of previous months. In April, for example, the fall had been greater than 5%.
The increase in prices continues to accelerate. Iri notes an increase in retail inflation which reached 6.91% in July, after +5% in June and +4% in May. Inflation continues to be driven by private label. The increase in prices of the products of the Carrefour, Casino, E.Leclerc and Auchan brands averaged 9.42% in July, a historically high level. As for national brands, the increase is more moderate with +5.9% in July compared to the same month of 2021.
