Consumption on the rise: in June sales of supermarkets and shopping centers grow

In June sales of supermarkets and shopping centers are growing, while those of self-services are decreasing, according to the survey carried out by INDEC.

Supermarket sales at constant prices amounted to $ 24,143.9 million, which represents an increase of 2.0% compared to June 2021.

With this the sales grow back after the setback in May, when they had lost 0.6% compared to the same month last year.

Constant price measurement cleans up the inflationary effect comparison for more accurate recordings.

Sales at current prices in June 2022 recorded in the Supermarkets Survey were total $ 196,114.5 million, which represents an increase of 68.6% compared to the same month of the previous year.

On the other hand, in the self-service it was registered in June a decrease of 1.1% at constant priceswhile at current prices, with a turnover of 33,924 million dollars, the increase was 68.4%.

In supermarkets, the groups of items with the most significant price increases in June compared to the same month of the previous year were: “Prepared and rotisserie” with an increase of 104.6%; “Bakery”, 83.9%; “Beverages”, 75.6%; and “Clothing, footwear and home textiles”, 74.3%.

In supermarkets, 98.2% of sales are made in physical stores and only 1.8% of transactions are online.

In that month, total sales at current prices made in cash equal 29.3% of total sales. For their part, those made by debit card represented 28.7% of the total, while credit card payments accounted for 38.0%. Finally, those made with other means of payment accounted for 4.0% of the total.

Jump in the malls

In shopping malls, total sales at constant prices, i.e. taking into account the effect of inflation, reached $ 6,765.8 million in June 2022, an increase of 114.2% Compared to the same month of the previous year.

While total sales at current prices reached $ 57,994.6 million, which implies an increase of 266.9% from one year to the next.

As of June 2022, the items that drove sales to current prices in shopping malls were: “Clothing, footwear and leather goods”, which represent 43.4% of the total, “Food court, food and kiosk”, with 13.3%; and the items “Electronics, household appliances and computers” and “Sports clothing and accessories”, both with 11.7%.

In June 2022, the survey carried out by INDEC was composed of a panel of 77 shopping centers, of which 16 are located in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires; another 18, in the 24 matches of the Greater Buenos Aires; 20, in the Pampa Region; 8, in the Cuyo Region; 10, in the Northern Region; and 5, in the Patagonian region.
