The Argentine Carlos Zarlengawho until last year was president of General Motors for South America, is the new owner of the car company Stellantis in Mexico. Zarlenga will take up his new role this Thursday, replacing Bruno Cattori.
Unlike Argentina, where Stellantis is managed by Europe and Brazil, in the case of Mexico the car manufacturer it depends on the United States. In fact, the announcement of Zarlenga’s appointment was made by Stellantis North America. The Argentine will report a Marco StewartCOO of Stellantis in the United States.
Stellantis is the product of the merger between Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot Automobiles. In turn, each of these automakers came from previous mergers: Fiat took over American Chrysler over the past decade, while Peugeot took over Citroën in the 1970s.
Zarlenga is a graduate economist at Belgrano University 48 years old who started as an executive at General Electric. He was named president of General Motors Argentina at the end of 2015 and, the following year, he embarked on an aggressive commercial policy to replace the then-leading Volkswagen from the podium of local auto sales.
In addition, during his administration, General Motors Argentina obtained from its parent company an investment of 300 million dollars to launch a new model at its plant in the town of General Alvear in Santa Fe. That new model, a local version of the SUV pursuerwill be this year the only local industrial launch.
The following year, Zarlenga was promoted to head of General Motors for Mercosur and moved to Sao Paulo, where he later led the American brand throughout South America. He retired from the automaker last year, aged just 47. together with his colleague Barry Englewho had developed a parallel career as the head of General Motors for North America, he founded the investment fund Qell LATAM partnerwhich they presented in October last year.
Now he has given a new change of rudder. Magazine Fortune of Mexico has announced that it will replace Cattori at the helm of the automaker, which in Mexico is the manufacturer of the emblematic RAM pickupone of the most coveted vehicles by argentines with good purchasing power.
Zarlenga’s appointment in Mexico comes just weeks after the announcement of the promotion of another Argentine executive in the sector, Pablo Di Si, to head Volkswagen in the United States.
