The prime minister confirmed Thursday that discussions on the pension reform issue will start after the launch of the National Council for Refoundation on September 8.

Elisabeth Borne said on Thursday that she wanted to “advance” the pension reform but “in consultation”, and confirmed that discussions on the issue will begin after the launch of the National Refoundation Council on September 8.

“It continues to be a very important issue” and the discussions “will begin after the National Council for Refoundation,” stressed Elisabeth Borne. “If we want to finance a protective social model, we must have resources and we cannot deprive ourselves of part of our ability to work to create wealth. It is also important to be able to finance the ecological transition tomorrow”, she argued.

“Discussion Show”

The annual report of the Pension Guidance Council, which will specify in particular the scope of the deficits in the pension system in the short and medium term, must be published on September 15.

Elisabeth Borne wants to discuss in particular “how can the proportion of older people who are in work increase” and “how can we gradually work a little more”. She acknowledged that the issue was “complex”, depending “on the work you do”. The Prime Minister did not mention this reform in the government projects on Wednesday after the government seminar.

But “it is not abandoned” and its “gradual deployment” will take place “during the year 2023”, said the government spokesman, Olivier Véran, who considered it “essential to consult” upstream. “We want to reform work as a whole, including the pension issue,” he said.
